Update #10: Downloads

Nov. 26th, 2006 | 07:48 pm

This is a somewhat weekly Mandarin Chinese MP3 Rotation in which I offer selected pieces of music for download encompassing many different genres.
*Please comment if you download so I can get a sense of how many people come here. You do not need a Livejournal to comment.
*Please delete the file(s) after 24 hours as they are for sampling purposes only.
*Please support the artists and purchase their albums if you enjoy what you hear.
*Don't repost/direct-link these files elsewhere.
*Files are deleted after a new update is added.
*I don't take requests.
*If you would like a song from a previous update, please leave a comment (provide your email!) and I'll try to get it to you.
*Feel free to add me to your friends list for updates.
*I upload what I like, which isn't necessarily new or mainstream.

The next few weeks will be a little different. I will not be posting songs that I own from CDs. These are songs that I have downloaded from other places.  It is unfortunate that I do not own all of the music that I love.  But I would still like to share these wonderful pieces of music with everyone.

SORRY IT'S BEEN SO LONG!

不留
王菲
將愛, 2003
Electronica

Faye Wong is "widely considered the most commercially and artistically distinguished female vocalist in recent Chinese music history", says Wikipedia. Need I say more? She has a distinctive voice and singing style that has kept her active for over twenty years.  Most people know her as the singer of Eyes on Me, the Final Fantasy VIII theme song.

If you don't download Bu Liu, your loss. It's amazing, and Faye wrote and composed it herself. It's very different, but not to the point of cacophony. On the contrary, it flows very well.

失戀無罪
aLin
失戀無罪, 2006
Rock, Pop

aLin is a newcomer who just released her debut album earlier this year.  Her voice is extremely powerful, reminiscent of A-Mei's in her prime.

Shi Lian Wu Zui perfectly showcases the power in her voice. Very emotionally charged and such.

人質
張惠妹
我要快樂?, 2006
Acoustic

A-Mei Chang, with her powerful voice, opened the doors for Taiwanese aboriginal people attempting to break into the music business. She was discovered by Zhang Yusheng and released her first album in 1996.

Renzhi is definitely a departure from her normal ballads. It's a mellow song with acoustic guitar that doesn't really have a chorus. Nonetheless it's a beautiful song.

夏天的風
元衛覺醒
幸福下載, 2005
Acoustic, Pop

Awaking is a duo that consists of Wesley (guitarist/composer) and Jay (vocalist).  They wrote the song Tiankong for Jolin Tsai.

Xiatian De Feng is relaxing but also fun.  Makes me feel like I'm at the beach.  Too bad it's like winter over here T_T

再見北極雪 ft. 周傳雄
陳慧琳
我是陽光的, 2005
Ballad

Kelly Chen is a very popular Hong Kong singer and actress. She had a role in the movie Infernal Affairs.

Zai Jian Beiji Xue is a remake of a duet Kelly Chen sang with another man a few years ago.  This version, however, is sung with Steve Chou, the composer of the song.  It's a pretty duet.

戀愛ing
五月天
知足, 2005
Rock, Punk

Mayday is one of the most popular rock bands in Taiwan.  Most of their songs are written by Ashin (vocalist). Teenagers like their music because they can relate to the themes brought up in their music.

If this song Lian Ai-ing doesn't make you happy, you're hopeless.

解脫
李玖哲
影子, 2005
R&B

Nicky Lee is a Korean-American who is a part of the Taiwanese hip hop group Machi.  He has released two solo albums. He is generally regarded as the best singer in Machi.

Jietuo is a fine example of how nice Nicky's voice is. It is husky and soulful, perfect for the R&B songs that he sings.

Clumsy
蕭蕭
I'm 蕭蕭, 2006
R&B, Rock

Xiao Xiao is best known for her voice which is light and almost child-like.  It has been compared with Faye Wong's voice.

Clumsy is in English, but I just couldn't resist since she technically is a Mandarin Chinese singer.  This song really requires some technique and emotion, and she fares well in singing it.

明天
楊乃文
ONE, 1997
Slow Rock

Faith Yang was born in Australia and attended Sydney University before moving to Taiwan to pursue a career in music. The influences of Australian pub rock and gothic rock are evident in her earlier compositions.

There's something mystifying about Mingtian that I can't really put my finger on. It's a bit repetitive but the melody is beautiful.

我行我素
MC Hot Dog
WAKE UP, 2006
Rap

MC Hot Dog is a Taiwanese rapper best known for his controversial, explicit, and usually humorous lyrics. He makes fun of a lot of famous people in his lyrics, usually others in the entertainment business.

Wo Xing Wo Su is a typical song by MC Hot Dog. Some expletives, and a piece of his mind. I like the flow in this one.

不對也要愛
櫻桃幫
親愛的王子, 2006
Slow Rock

Zha-zha (lead vocalist), Gua (guitarist), Xiao-qian (bassist), and Da-tian (drummer) make up Cherry Boom, a band they formed as students of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.

This song is amazing. Maybe it’s just an appealing melody and some talented composition. Nonetheless, I do feel that the lead singer's voice seals the deal. A singer with just a more emotionless voice would have just broken the song. She accomplishes it flawlessly.

愛就愛了
陳琳
愛就愛了, 2001
Acoustic, Rock

Chen Lin is a female singer from mainland China.

Ai Jiu Ai Le has a catchy melody and exudes a carefree aura.  I love the guitar playing.

柯有倫
戰神, 2004
Rock

Alan Kuo is the son of the famous stuntman "Xiao Hei".  He gained popularity by composing and singing the theme song of the drama "Mars".

Ling is almost indescribable.  It has a perpetual pulse that keeps driving forward, and the emotion is so raw and full of adrenaline.

丟了
趙之璧
在你和天空之間, 2001
Slow Rock

Bibi Chao was the lead singer of the band Scrap Metal, which released an album in 1998.

Diu Le starts off with beautiful piano playing and with a slight attitude before moving onto even more powerful singing.

Sorry for the delay.

忘了 (5:07)
輕鬆玩
我要輕鬆玩, 2005
Pop, Ballad

Relax One is a pop-rock band fronted by Summer Hsu, who wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album.  They have only released one album so far, which actually took six years to make.  Most of their songs are up-tempo, pop-rock compositions and lots of acoustic as well.

Wang Le is one of the few ballads on the album.  Though their fast songs are great too, this is just beautiful to the nth degree and despite being rather ballad-like is never boring or uninspired. (I'll post one of their fun, fast songs another time)

That Moment Is Over (4:43)
蘇打綠
蘇打綠, 2005
Acoustic, Indie

Sodagreen is a Taiwanese indie band distinguished by the lead singer's distinctive voice, which is rather high-pitched for a male but contributes to the band's unique sound. Most of their music falls in the acoustic genre.

That Moment Is Over has a great opening with the slightest hint of Desert's Live Jiuguan 300 Miao. He sings some lines in heavily-accented English, but it is easy to ignore since the rest of the song rocks. It's hard to characterize a song like this; it's very different from all the Chinese pop out there. Love the guitar and strings.

愛情36計 ft. 小丸子 (3:45)

Special Thanks To... 感謝自選輯, 2005
Rock

Shin is the frontman of the band "Shin". His solo album mostly consists of covers of songs that he appreciates, have influenced him, or helped him throughout his life.

Aiqing 36 Ji was originally sung by Jolin Tsai. Now why would a rocker as cool as Shin sing such a song? Because his daughter loves this song. Thus, this is a duet with his baby daughter. He has  completely transformed the pop song into a rock song, and the result is just amazing (not to mention his daughter is so cute!). For comparison, watch Jolin's video on Youtube.

決戰鬥室 (3:08)
潘瑋柏
高手, 2005
Hip-Hop

Wilber (Will) Pan was born in the United States. He later moved to Taiwan and attended an international school. He attended college in California. Before releasing his first album he was a VJ on Channel V.

Something about the way he pronounces words when he raps kind of throws me off; nonetheless Jue Zhan Dou Shi is an adrenaline-pumping song that's great for dancing.

I'm OK (3:57)
江美琪
朋友的朋友, 2003
Acoustic, Pop

Melody Chiang is a Taiwanese singer most known for singing expressive, beautiful love songs. She debuted in 1999 and has released nine albums since then.

I'm OK is one of Melody's faster songs, and it just has a very attractive melody (no pun). I love her voice. It sounds so sweet and relaxed.

不愛 (3:25)
陶喆
太美麗, 2006
R&B, Ballad

Widely considered the grandfather of R&B in Taiwan,  David Tao has released five albums since his debut in 1997. Though born in Hong Kong, he was raised and educated in the US and moved to Taiwan only to pursue his singing-songwriting career. Tao composes most of his own songs, and has written songs for other artists as well. He is known for being very socially conscious, voicing his views on world issues.

Bu Ai is a very emotionally-charged song, and he sings the chorus very strongly. Beautiful and a bit sad.

進行式 ft. 胡彥斌 (4:19)
蕭亞軒
愛上愛, 2003
Pop

Elva Hsiao speaks fluent English, having lived in Vancouver for much of her childhood. She was discovered when she entered a TVB talent search and emerged as a finalist. So far, she has released eight albums.

Jinxing Shi is the only song I like from this album. This duet with Anson Hu is beautiful, since I love both their voices. In some places, Anson even sings higher than her. This is a nice mid-tempo song.

Mr. Q (3:21)
蔡依林
舞孃, 2006
Pop, Hip-Hop

After winning an MTV singing competition in 1999, Jolin Tsai was signed by Universal Music (she is now with Capitol Records). She is most known for her revealing clothing and provocative dance moves.

Despite my dislike for Jolin (yes I do own this album nonetheless, but it was a gift), this song is ridiculously catchy, and great dance music.

The following songs are just voice + guitar.

第一個清晨 (1:56)
王力宏
蓋世英雄Live concert演唱會影音全記錄, 2006
Acoustic

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Leehom Wang didn't start to learn Chinese until he was eighteen years old. A talented musician, he composes almost all of his own songs. He has ventured in to the Japanese market and subsequently released two albums in Japanese. For his two most recent albums, Shangri-la and Heroes of Earth, he promoted his new "chinked-out" style, which features a mixture of traditional Chinese instruments and hip-hop elements.

The live version of this song is special because Leehom is the one playing the guitar while singing. It isn't up to recording studio quality, but I don't think live versions can get any better than this. This song is very peaceful and light. I think Leehom has one of the most beautiful voices in Taiwan.

寶貝(in a day) (2:25)
張懸
My Life Will..., 2006
Acoustic

Deserts started composing and writing music when she was thirteen. She is well-known as a live performer and has been performing for quite a few years before releasing this album. Her voice is light and almost cute at times. She writes all her songs and plays the guitar as well. She has a very "coffeehouse" feel to her music.

Short but sweet. Deserts has two versions of this song on the album, but I like this version better. The song is cute and the epitome of simplicity. She wrote it when she was thirteen (or so I hear) and I absolutely love it to pieces.

表面的和平 (3:40)
陳綺貞
華麗的冒險, 2005
Acoustic

Cheer Chen was and still is a singer-songwriter on the indie music scene. She is known for her distinguishably sweet but strong voice and acoustic music.

This song goes back to the songs of Cheer Chen's early days which basically just consisted of an acoustic guitar and her voice. Somewhat bare yet sung very well.

Some other peaceful/slow songs for your enjoyment.

黃昏 (5:42)
張棟樑
張棟樑, 2005
Pop

Nicholas Teo is a Malaysian artist who won the Astro Talent Quest in 2002 by singing "Huanghun", a song originally sung by Steve Chou (Zhou Chuan Xiong). As a result, Teo has sung quite a few other songs by Steve Chou. Though he first became well-known in Malaysia, he has been gradually gaining popularity in Taiwan and China.

Huanghun is beautiful in its melancholy, and yet there is some hint of hope in the melody. I like the original version by Steve Chou better, but Nicholas Teo does do it justice. There's a nice guitar solo in it as well.

期限 (4:50)
王光良
童話, 2005
Pop

Michael Wong (usually credited as 光良 or Guang Liang), from Malaysia, used to be in a duo with singer Victor Huang (Huang Pinguan) called Guang Liang Pin Guan. They both have their separate solo careers now. Michael Wong spent two years putting together his latest album, Tonghua, which features the work of many acclaimed songwriters.

For the album Tonghua, a contest was held and the best lyrics were chosen.  Qixian was the winner. The lyrics are pretty, but the melody is very beautiful as well.

Man, I am running out of albums to rip. Broke >.< Remember guys, these songs are from original CDs I own so just keep that in mind. I'm not just downloading and then reuploading stuff. Though I may have to do that soon if I have no more music left. Hopefully it won't happen.

Very pop-ish collection this week.

如果的事 ft. 張韶涵 (3:48)
范瑋琪
一比一, 2005
Pop

Fan Weiqi, affectionately known as FanFan, is a female singer who was nominated for the Best Mandarin Female Singer at the most recent Golden Melody Awards (17th).  She attended Harvard University but left before graduating.  She is currently going out with Heiren, the host of the variety show "Wo Ai He Se Hui".

This duet is absolutely beautiful, the first time I ever heard FanFan or Angela Chang sing. FanFan's voice is lower than Angela's and the voices just complement each other very well.

月桂女神 (5:14)
S.H.E
Forever, 2006
Pop

S.H.E is a trio consisting of members Selina Ren, Hebe Tian, and Ella Chen. S.H.E was formed after HIM Universal Music held a contest in search of a singer to sign to their label. Selina won first place. However, instead of giving the contract to just her, HIM decided to sign on Hebe and Ella as well, and S.H.E was born. The group has released many cover songs.

Yue Gui Nüsheng is a beautiful song. It refers to the story of Daphne and Apollo in Greek mythology. Very mystical, up-in-the-clouds sort of music. Love the melody. The S.H.E girls' voices blend nicely in this song.

可惜你不在 (4:37)
戴愛玲
Magic, 2002
Pop

Dai Ailing is a female singer born in the Taiwanese aborigines.  She has released two albums and has collaborated many times with the Taiwanese rock band Shin.  She started out by singing in pubs and bars.

Kexi Ni Bu Zai really showcases her vocals. It's a powerful ballad.

Revolution (4:08)
F.I.R.
F.I.R. 飛兒樂團, 2004
Rock, Electronic, Rap

F.I.R. is a group from Taiwan that was started by Ian Chen (producer, keyboards). The other two members are Real Huang (guitar) and Faye Chan (vocals). F.I.R. stands for Fairyland in Reality and is also made up of the first initals of all the band members' names. They are commonly compared to the Japanese band Do As Infinity, which also consists of a female and two males. However, their similarities can be debated.

Revolution starts out with some beautiful erhu playing before exploding into a full-blown rock song. Faye's voice is as unique and powerful as ever.

心願 (4:33)
孫燕姿
完美的一天, 2005
Piano Pop

Hailing from Singapore, Stefanie Sun, born on July 23, 1978, rose to international fame with her one-of-a-kind voice and unique look. She majored in Sales and Marketing at Nanyang Technological University before becoming a singer. She became one of the few major award-winning Chinese popular musicians who had come from Singapore.

Something about Xinyuan separates it from other boring slow songs, but I'm not sure what. Stefanie Sun's voice does play a part, along with the nice piano in the background.

那天 (3:01)
楊乃文
愛情合約 電視原聲帶, 2004
Acoustic, Electronic

Faith Yang was born in Australia and attended Sydney University before moving to Taiwan to pursue a career in music. The influences of Australian pub rock and gothic rock are evident in her earlier compositions.

She has a low voice that has been slightly digitally altered for this song. Na Tian is a more peaceful song with just acoustic guitar in the background, very different from some of her other songs. [Note: This song was taken from a soundtrack, not from her album].

逆風 (4:17)
花園精靈
東方茱麗葉 電視原聲帶, 2006
Rock

Not much is known about Garden Sister, since, though having appeared on the Tokyo Juliet soundtrack, they haven't released an album yet.  They are made up of two sixteen-year old girls, Ailun and Jingru.

Nifeng is a powerful song with great string instrumentals and remarkable singing/harmonizing by the two girls. I have no doubt they have enough talent to make it in the music industry.

美麗的回憶 (4:56)
XL
XL, 2004
Power Ballad

XL is an indie rock band from Taiwan that was featured in the Taiwanese drama "Devil Beside You". So far they have only released one full-length album. Some have described them as the "Chinese Linkin Park".

Meili De Huiyi is one of their slow songs and very different in style to the rest of the album, which is more rock and electronic. XL shows that they can do these softer types of songs flawlessly as well. I am personally in love with this song.

我心似海洋 (5:09)
江美琪
戀人心中有一首詩, 2005
Pop

Melody Chiang is a Taiwanese singer most known for singing expressive, beautiful love songs. She debuted in 1999 and has released nine albums since then.

Wo Xin Si Haiyang is very peaceful and passionate at the same time, not to mention poetic, which would make sense since the album's name is "Lover's Poem".

I upload what I like, which isn't necessarily new or mainstream. My sole reason for creating this site was to share my taste in music with the rest of the world.

破曉 (4:36)
南拳媽媽
2号餐, 2005
Electronic, Rock, Rap
Nan Quan Mama is a group founded by singer-songwriter Jay Chou and is composed of Devon (彈頭), Yuhao (宇豪), Lara (梁心頤) and Chang Jie (張傑). They can all write music. Most of the time, Devon writes the lyrics and Yuhao composes the music, but both Lara and Chang Jie contribute much on the composing side as well. Yuhao plays piano and Chang Jie plays guitar.

I found it hard to fit this song into a genre, but Poxiao is one of my all-time favorite songs. The intro is a great combination of piano and strings, and then it moves into more rock territory. And, of course, the song wouldn't be the same without Lara's voice mixed into all the male voices.

旅行的意義 (4:18)
陳綺貞
華麗的冒險, 2005
Acoustic
Cheer Chen was and still is a singer-songwriter on the indie music scene. She is known for her distinguishably sweet but strong voice and acoustic music.

Lüxing De Yiyi, the first track on her newest album, is beautiful in its simplicity. The lyrics are well-written too. This is actually the second version of this song. I prefer the first version, which is just acoustic guitar in the background, as opposed to this newer, complicated string arrangement. However, I don't own that one.

都只因為你
張韶涵
Over The Rainbow, 2004
Pop, Rock
Some find it unbelievable the power of Angela's voice despite her small frame. Besides singing, Angela Chang has also acted in quite a few Taiwanese dramas including My MVP Valentine, At Dolphin Bay, Love at the Aegean Sea, When Dolphin Met Cat, and Bump Off Lover.

There's really nothing specific to point out about Dou Zhi Yinwei Ni. I just like it for its melody and Angela's execution of it. It's very passionate and powerful.
